The galleries of Angkor Wat bear a series of bas-reliefs (stone carvings) on their walls. These depict intricate large-scale scenes, mainly from the Hindu epics of the Tamayana and the Mahabharata.

The western gallery show the Battle of Lanka and the Battle of Kurukshetra.
The southern gallery has a historical scene - a procession of Suryavarman II, then the 32 hells and 37 heavens of Hindu mythology.
The eastern gallery shows the Churning of the Sea of Milk, followed by Vishnu defeating asuras.

These photo's are taken within the three rectangular galleries.
On the walls within the galleries can be seen many amazing bas-reliefs (see next post).

The structure of the temple consists of:

2. An apron of open ground 30 m wide which surrounds
3. An outer wall (which is 3.6 km long, and 4.5 m high)
4. Inside the outer wall are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next.
5. At the centre of the temple stands four towers.

Entrance to the temple is by either:

1. An earth bank (to the east)

Stilted houses at Kampong Phluk, situated within the floodplains of the Tonle Sap lake.
During the dry season the water levels in the lake are low and the village is situated on dry ground. During the wet season the water levels in the lake rise and the villages become flooded. This photo is taken during the dry season. This house has two levels. The storage level situated half-way up the stilts will become flooded in the wet season, but allows for increased room in the actual living area (at the top of the stilts) during the dry season. During the wet season, boats are the only means of transport around the villages.
