Taj Mahal : Entrance - The darwaze-i-rauza

This is the original entrance to the Taj Mahal: The Darwaze-i-rauza.
It is a detached gateway.
The gateway is three stories high, and on either side there are several rooms and halls. The central arch is surrounded by an elaborate frame, with set in marble, and containing the Daybreak Sura (Sura-al-Fajr) taken from the Quran. The panels of the frame are built so that those at the top are in larger writing (and proportionally downwards), so that when viewed from the ground, the script looks uniform in size.

Taken from the window of the car, these pictures give a glimpse into the poverty of those living alongside the busy road. Shelters composed of old pieces of plastic, cloth and any other materials that can be found are constructed amongst piles of rubbish, giving some shelter from the fearsome sun, but not from the overwhelming heat.
