Taj Mahal : Entrance - The darwaze-i-rauza

This is the original entrance to the Taj Mahal: The Darwaze-i-rauza.
It is a detached gateway.
The gateway is three stories high, and on either side there are several rooms and halls. The central arch is surrounded by an elaborate frame, with set in marble, and containing the Daybreak Sura (Sura-al-Fajr) taken from the Quran. The panels of the frame are built so that those at the top are in larger writing (and proportionally downwards), so that when viewed from the ground, the script looks uniform in size.

delhi india red fort lal Qila Naubat Khana

The Naubat Khana (meaning Music Gallery) is a three story pavillion constructed from sandstone. Here the musicians played their instruments announcing prayers, and on other special occasions.

Today, on the second floor, there is a war museum containing objects maingly from the Mughal era.

For more information see the excellent guide that I used when I visited the Red Fort:

"Red Fort - A comprehensive illustrated guide to a splendid imperial citadel",
an Eyewitness Travel guide. Published in India in 2008 by Dorling Kindersley.

Taken from the window of the car, these pictures give a glimpse into the poverty of those living alongside the busy road. Shelters composed of old pieces of plastic, cloth and any other materials that can be found are constructed amongst piles of rubbish, giving some shelter from the fearsome sun, but not from the overwhelming heat
