Phuket, Thailand - Rubber Plantation part 2
June 10th 2010 02:46
This rubber tree has been tapped.
Note the area where the bark has been removed to allow collection of the rubber. The sap (rubber) runs down from this wound to and collects at the bottom of the wound (see the white line left behind from previous rubber collection) which is angled downwards around the tree.
The sap then runs down along the base of this wound to the very bottom. Here it runs vertically downwards into a metal shunt that has been inserted into the tree.
The shunt directs the sap into the collection cup (in these photos the collection cups are turned downwards, to keep them clean and empty while the rubber is not actively being collected).
The empty cups are covered in residue left behind by previous rubber collections.
